Research Data Requirements

Biologic COPD RWD

Key criteria often include: Blood eosinophils ≥ 300 cells/µL, indicating Type 2–driven inflammation ≥ 2 moderate or severe exacerbations in the previous 12 months, despite standard treatment

Pediatric patients

  • Age: Adults
  • Gender: Male and Female
  • Diagnosis: ICD codes: From a medical informatics standpoint, this is how we’d expect these patients to be captured: * ICD-10 does not include a distinct code for the “biologic-eligible” COPD phenotype (i.e., the eosinophilic, frequent-exacerbator subgroup). Instead, you code the underlying COPD and its clinical manifestations. The most commonly used codes are:
    • J44.0 – Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with (acute) lower respiratory infection i
    • J44.1 – Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with (acute) exacerbation
    • J44.8 – Other specified chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
    • J44.9 – Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, unspecified
    • If you need to capture coexisting emphysema or chronic bronchitis, you may also see:
      • J43.9 – Emphysema, unspecified
      • J42 – Chronic bronchitis
    • Unspecified Key point: “Biologic-eligible” is a clinical characterization (eosinophil count ≥300 cells/µL + frequent exacerbations) and isn’t reflected in the ICD-10 code itself. You’d use the appropriate J44.x code plus ancillary Z-codes or lab/documentation in the record to support phenotype-driven treatment decisions.
